Growing Esteem Information Futures Commission

Decision-making criteria

How will we know if our strategies will achieve the outcomes we seek? Our intention is to judge ideas based on a number of criteria. The following are the main criteria proposed at present – please let us know what we’re missing.

How well will it ensure we achieve Melbourne’s future directions as embodied in Growing Esteem ?

In research to maintain and enhance our position as an internationally leading comprehensive university and to create the researchers and academics of the future, through improvement in overall performance coupled with focus on areas of strength.

In learning and teaching to meet the needs of undergraduate students for a broad education followed by intense professional training at postgraduate level.

In knowledge transfer to engage the University and the wider community in collective experiences for mutual benefit.

To link the three strands of the helix for the mutual benefit of all three and enhance the development of learning communities.

Does it meet the current and likely future needs of our students and staff, recognising the diversity of needs as shaped by discipline differences, collections, tools and technologies?

We will collect a cross-section of views via a questionnaire on:

  1. how our staff and students currently use scholarly information and related infrastructure
  2. how they would ideally like to use these.

We will look for patterns of use and needs within these.

We will help to facilitate groups nominated by each dean in developing faculty responses to the Information Futures consultation paper.

How well does it ensure we have ‘future-proofed’ given what the future environment may be like in 10 years: scholarly information, universities, and more broadly?

We will review the strategy against a set of diverse possible future scenarios developed by the Expert Panel, postgraduate students and the project team. These will be published on the Information Futures Commission's web site.

Is it attainable and sustainable for Melbourne?

Does the University have the resources and capabilities to devote to all the elements of the strategy?

Are there some elements where it is desirable and/or feasible for the University to partner with others to achieve the strategy’s aims?

Are there some elements where the University could seek resources from benefactors?

Will tradeoffs need to be made and if so what would they be?
